Maths is the most popular A-level again.

Once again, maths has been the most popular A-level subject, with 112,138 entries in 2025.

This is up by more than 4% compared with 2024. Entries in further maths, an A-level that expands on the maths curriculum, have also risen – an increase of 7% since 2024, with over 19,000 entries this year.

Maths is a gateway subject to ALL STEM degrees, economics, and other analytical courses. It’s a stepping stone to some of the most lucrative and rewarding careers available and it’s an A level I would recommend to anyone who has achieved a grade 8 or 9 at GCSE. After all it’s theoretically possible to score 100%, if you get all of the questions right, there is no room for subjectivity on the part of the marker.

One should bear in mind that if a student has struggled with GCSE maths they are unlikely to cope with the A level syllabus. If a student wishes to study maths post-16, but not the A level course, there is still the option of studying the L3 Core Maths qualification.
